Her commitment to representing diverse communities is evident in her roles, from being a founding member of the Indian Women's Association of Wales, which now boasts over 230 members, to her significant work with Race Cymru Council and the Newport Cultural Hub, where 21 ethnic minority communities come together to celebrate their heritage and foster collaboration.

For Julie, Labour is about building communities, celebrating diversity, and ensuring that everyone has a voice. She believes that representation matters and that a fairer, more inclusive society is possible — a society where everyone belongs.

A Voice for Casnewydd & Islwyn
Julie is the Labour shortlisted candidate for Senedd 2026 for Casnewydd & Islwyn. While her professional experience has been shaped by working across Wales, where she has championed underrepresented communities and made a real impact, she is now committed to bringing that knowledge and expertise to the people of Casnewydd and Islwyn.
Her candidacy is rooted in the values of fairness, compassion, and social justice. Julie understands the pressures families face and is dedicated to tackling the key challenges in the constituency – from the cost of living and housing, to crime, safety, and air quality. As a leader, she values collaboration, collective responsibility, and above all, listening to the voices of the people she serves.

Championing Women of Colour in Politics
As a woman of colour in politics, Julie brings a unique perspective to leadership. She is determined to amplify the voices of underrepresented groups and challenge the systemic barriers that women of colour face in public life. Julie's leadership is not just about holding positions of power; it’s about using her platform to bring others with her and drive positive change.
Through her work in Cardiff’s Cabinet and her leadership of the Indian Women's Association, Julie has demonstrated how leadership can empower others. She believes that women, especially women of colour, must be at the forefront of decision-making. In a world that often marginalizes their voices, Julie stands firm in her belief that their lived experiences are invaluable to shaping policies that serve all communities.

Julie’s Leadership in Action
As Cabinet Member for Public Health and Equalities, Julie has worked on some of the most challenging issues facing our society today. She has championed policies to tackle poverty, support asylum seekers, and improve public health access for underserved communities like the Gypsy Roma community. Julie has also worked tirelessly on initiatives to promote clean air, improve healthcare services, and secure better public transport for the Valleys.
Her ability to lead complex projects from debating on motions in the council to securing funding for community initiatives which reflects her strong governance experience.
