Statement to voters
"I have been a committed Green voter since 1984. I joined the party in 1988 and have been active ever since, including as a core campaign team member in every local, national, and European election. I have held local and national posts and am well networked with party activists across the country. I have attended Conference over 55 times, speaking on panels and running training sessions.
I was a member of Caroline Lucas’ campaign team that elected her as one of our first MEPs in 1999 and visited Caroline in Brussels during her time as an MEP.
In 2008 I was employed as Regional Liaison Officer for Oxfordshire & Berkshire working in Caroline Lucas’ MEP staff team, continuing in the post when Keith Taylor took over in 2010. I worked in that role until 2014. My time as a member of MEP staff gave me a great insight in to the workings of the European Parliament and the role of an MEP both in the Parliament and as a constituency representative.
I was active during the EU Referendum campaign, running daily street stalls in Oxford. I am passionate about the benefits of staying in the EU and what MEPs can achieve, but also understand where improvements need to be made. Since 2016 I have represented my local party as a speaker at pro Remain and People’s Vote rallies in Oxford.
In 1996 I was one of three GPEW delegates (with Jean Lambert) to the Congress of the Federation of European Green Parties which gave me a good grounding in understanding how to work with other European Greens.
I was an elected Councillor for 15 years, chairing council committees, drafting policy, and participating in public enquiries. I was the first Green Lord Mayor of Oxford in 2011 to 2012.
I have worked with elected Greens at all levels for over 25 years and have been Chair of the Association of Green Councillors (AGC) for almost three years. I have been an AGC representative on Political Committee since 2015, working closely with our leadership team, and worked on the new party strategy.
I have addressed large crowds on a host of local, national, and international issues and have extensive media experience including participating in radio and television panel debates. I was a volunteer member of the Conference Press Office Team from 1992 to 1998
I now want to use my knowledge of the EU, my experience as an elected Councillor, and my extensive experience as an active party member to represent the South East Region as an MEP.
I would seek to use the skills I have gained over many years of Green activism, of campaigning proactively on local and national issues, and my knowledge of how to work with a diverse range of people gained from representing an ethnically and socially diverse Council Ward, to reach out to new voters, including those who have become disillusioned and isolated from politics, and sell them the benefits of EU membership.
