Member of Parliament

Members of Parliament (MPs) represent your interests and concerns in the House of Commons.

MPs consider and can propose new laws as well as raising issues that matter to you in the House. This includes asking government ministers questions about current issues including those which affect local constituents.

MPs split their time between working in Parliament itself, working in the constituency that elected them and working for their political party.

There are four local Councillors representing you.

Unitary authorities are responsible for services like:

  • transport
  • planning
  • fire and public safety
  • social care
  • libraries
  • waste management
  • trading standards
  • rubbish collection
  • recycling
  • Council Tax collections
  • housing
  • planning applications

Members of the Scottish Parliament for Highlands and Islands

There are seven members of the Scottish Parliament for Highlands and Islands representing you.

MSPs take part in examining and passing Bills (proposed laws). They represent you in the Scottish Parliament and your local area and they examine the work of the Scottish Government.
