Statement to voters

It is a genuine privilege to be standing as local councillor for the Liberal Democrats in Dartmoor Ward and therefore supporting the collective voices of all members of our community regardless of party.

Full statement

I live and work in rural Dartmoor, with my two daughters, three dogs and one cat. I have businesses in Devon, and employ people locally. I have collaborated with and worked on vital campaigns and projects in Devon over many years, I have guest-lectured, spoken and campaigned on local media and been actively involved in a wide variety of important social and environmental issues, not just locally but nationally. I have a long- standing track record for my work with children and women’s human rights and health care, and the rights of the LBGTI community. After a decade of spiralling costs and persistent neglect of many of our basic needs by consecutive Tory governments, nothing is more important to me than championing change and standing solid behind the true wishes and needs of our communities: social care, health care, adequate provision for the needs of children and the elderly, and the protection of under-threat environment. I am also committed to fighting for the rights of those in work or challenged with access to work. Equality and representation of your voice and needs is my key focus. Community and affordable living with support and representation is key to building happier people and stronger, healthy communities. Our true needs and concerns have not been heard and not represented effectively, if at all, by the incumbent independent and conservative ‘representative/s’ with West Devon and Torridge, but we, the Liberal Democrats, cannot make changes until we are elected to make change. My core focus will be to firstly meet and listen and then summarise and act on your behalf, whether your focus is farming and subsidies, supporting families, better education, veteran support, or the support of those with greater health and social needs. I believe we all need to be truly valued to build positive lives and accessible, proud and valued futures. If change is required at a higher level than local council, I will promise to apply pressure wherever it is needed. I have years of experience working in Whitehall and Westminster, in forums and at a cross party level for NGOs, as well as in Holyrood in Scotland. I have been proud to work, on occasion, in unity with numerous charities and at the UN and with varying UN Treaty Bodies and Special Rapporteurs and have collaborated with various non-profit organisations and NGOs, as well as with politicians in both the Houses of Parliament and the House of Lords. I have worked, both locally and internationally, supporting policy and children’s human rights changes as well as holding governments locally and nationally to account in varying areas where academic, health, education and social change is desperately needed. I have often had the opportunity to feed into the media to represent voices and needs and address at public events and on discussion panels. I have been proud, and feel honoured, to have received numerous awards and accolades for my work and that of the teams I’ve worked with and driven forward. Changing broken systems and ignored policies and the needs for strong representation within equality and human rights legislation has been my focus for many years. SEND children and young people in care and with mental health needs have played a huge part in my work, as has betterment and transparency on where representation is needed. I have been widely recognised for my work as part of iUK and LGBTI+ advocacy. I have never felt more convinced that we need change. I feel every person regardless of age, gender, religion, ability, race need an equal opportunity to be represented by someone living in and or engaging in their /our community. I will ensure your voices and demands are heard and I will stand with resolute confidence and in unity with my colleagues to represent you. My campaign promises include supporting people from all walks of life, keeping access to Dartmoor open while protecting the environment, lobbying for better rural transport, better social care for veterans and the elderly, affordable housing for local families and building a thriving and successful community.
