Statement to voters
The Conservatives have selected James Bellemy, a lifelong West Somerset resident and successful local business owner, to stand in the upcoming Somerset Council by-election for Dunster.
Full statement
The by-election follows the retirement of long-serving councillor Christine Lawrence.
James was born and raised locally, attending local schools and West Somerset College. His working life began at 15 at the Northfield Hotel in Minehead, sparking a passion for food and hospitality. Over the years he worked in kitchens across West Somerset, before he went on to realise a long-held ambition by reopening a long-closed fish and chip shop in Minehead.
James’s campaign will focus on the issues that matter most to residents, improving connectivity across the area, including protecting and enhancing vital bus routes, standing up to the Liberal Democrats’ punishing 7.5% council tax rise, and supporting legal efforts to block the use of migrant hotels in West Somerset, ensuring decisions about the community are made locally and in the best interests of residents.
Speaking after his selection, James said, “This is my home. From school days to running a business in the heart of our community, I’ve always been proud to live and work here. I want to give something back by standing up for local people. We need better transport links, lower taxes, and to protect our communities from decisions imposed without local consent. I will work tirelessly for the residents of this area.”
Jean Parbrook, Chairman of the Tiverton and Minehead Conservative Association, added, “We are delighted to put forward such a strong local candidate who understands the challenges and opportunities facing our community. I would also like to pay tribute to Cllr Christine Lawrence, who has given more than 20 years of service in local government. She has been a dedicated and tireless advocate for local people, and we are grateful for all she has done.”
