Statement to voters
Together we can fix Lambeth
The Liberal Democrats have a plan to fix our Borough.
Full statement
Lambeth Labour have let us down. Labour say there isn’t enough money to keep the streetlights bright or run the Lambeth Country Show. But Labour have wasted millions on failed housing schemes and on fighting residents in court.
1. Ensure residents shape decisions that affect them
Require resident agreement and co-design for everything from traffic schemes and park events to care and special educational needs plans.
Bring back lost youth facilities with young people designing what they need.
End the ‘Town Hall knows best’ culture and Labour’s ‘tick-box’ consultations
2. Fix Lambeth’s finances
Redirect the millions Labour waste on failed vanity projects back into local services, ending the era of undeliverable financial 'wish-lists', bail-out loans and escalating debt.3. Tackling crime & caring for our streets
Keep people safe by ending Labour’s street light dimming plan.
Partner with police on active CCTV monitoring in crime hot-spots.
Keep police station front counters open and promote trust in policing.
Plant more trees, repair pavements and clean streets.
Launch regular ‘mega-skip’ rounds, and catch and fine fly-tippers.
4. Fix Lambeth Housing and tackle homelessness
Redirect the £21m Labour is paying lawyers defending the council's shoddy repairs into actual repairs.
Pay contractors for finished jobs – not every call-out, with a tenant / leaseholder sign-off process before payment is made.
Build new social housing and bring empty homes back into use to tackle homelessness
5. Improved care: safe, person-led and efficient
Back home carers and involve people in their own care plans.
Protect children with early intervention with family support involving the wider family in children’s plans.
Support domestic abuse refuges.
Offer elderly and disabled people home safety checks to prevent greater risk and cost later.
6. A fairer deal for everyone on our roads
Encourage public transport, provide more safe walking and cycling routes and back car sharing.
Expand EV charging, cycle parking and e-bike bays, but impound abandoned e-bikes at the operators’ cost.
End Labour's hikes to parking permit fees, with fairer charges for residents, visitors and others. We can fix LambethAbout me
I have lived in Streatham for thirty-six years.
Since 1994 I have lived a hundred yards from Tooting Bec Common. I am a regular swimmer at the Lido, although only a "fair weather dipper", usually confining my swims to March to November!
I have a long-standing involvement with local voluntary groups. I am currently Vice-chair of the Friends of Hillside Gardens, a Trustee of the Streatham Society, and a director of the Streatham Festival.
I am returning to the political fray after twenty five years working in Whitehall. I previously stood for election in St Leonard's ward in 1994, when I achieved a 26% increase in the Lib Dem vote, paving the way for Clive Bennett, Roger Giess, and Brian Palmer to be elected as a Lib Dem councillors for the ward four years later. St Leonard's ward elected hard working Lib Dem councillors for sixteen years, and can do so again.
