Statement to voters

I was born and raised in Wandsworth.

Full statement

It’s where I call home. Our area and community have helped to shape who I am and with the world in turmoil I want to do want I can to give back and protect and enhance the place we all call home.

Who am I?
I hold an MSc in Gender, Peace and Security studies for the London School of Economics and Political Science. I’ve been a student of history, interested in why things are they way they are and how can we stop repeating the same mistakes. I have experiencing campaigning for women’s rights and peace organisations and currently works as Strategy Review Officer for a Charitable Trust which supports the social justice sector and those working to change things for the better. Central to my work and approach is the aim to address the root causes of injustice, inequality and conflict.

I take an intersectional approach, understanding that issues of climate crisis, wealth and social inequality, the cost-of-living crisis, the housing crisis, increased war and conflict are all interrelated issues that operate on a global and national scale but have very real impacts on people’s day-to-day lives. Our current system prioritises profit over people and planet, while wealth generation is necessary this system is not sustainable. It means the shareholders of the privatised water companies and fossil fuels companies are raking in billions while we have the privilege of footing the bill through higher fuel, energy and water bills and having sewage dumped in our rivers and waterways.

Increasingly it feels like our communities are being divided while the basics required to live a fulfilling life move further out of reach or are unaffordable for many. Things feel like they are getting worse, not better. This is why I am standing as a Green Party councillor candidate.

What would I do as councillor?
If elected, I will work to improve local democracy to make sure residents are involved in decision making and budget spending; push to protect our Green spaces and increase biodiversity & number of trees planted as a means to mitigate the impact of heatwaves; create better, safer cycle routes and make public transport more accessible; work to make homes more affordable and energy efficient; protect independent local shops and services; and call for divestment of the council’s pension fund from fossil fuels and those profiting from war crimes & genocide.
