Statement to voters
Tom was born in Byker, and went into the NHS nurse training at the age of 23.

He initially worked to get young people and children into the community instead of long stay hospitals, and was one of the first leaning disability community nurses in Northumberland. Tom was awarded the MBE in 2010 for services to nursing and to learning disabilities services. He has sat for several years on the Chief constables independent advisory group, is a public governor for both the Northumberland NHS trust and currently the Newcastle hospitals NHS trust. Tom also volunteers at St Mary’s Cathedral, and is a volunteer litter picker around the City.
