Statement to voters
I am the Conservative and Unionist MP for the Brigg and Goole constituency where I also live in the small village of Airmyn, near Goole.
Full statement
Our constituency covers parts of both East Yorkshire, where I was born and grew up, and North Lincolnshire where I also have strong work ties and family. I was born and raised in East Yorkshire and am the son of a school secretary and former foundry worker. I attended my local comprehensive school before going to Wyke Sixth Form College in Hull, and then on to University in York. Being local is important to me and it really is a privilege to represent an area where my family have lived for centuries!
Before getting elected to Parliament I was a local school teacher, most recently teaching in Scunthorpe at an Infant School. However, I am actually a Secondary History teacher and previously taught in some of the toughest schools in Hull. This was an incredibly rewarding and fantastic experience and I have made education and young people’s issues some of my top priorities in Parliament. I continue to serve as a School Governor and have also served as a Councillor, most recently as a Parish Councillor in Airmyn.
I made clear during my election campaign that I wanted to be a strong independent voice for our area and I meant it. I wont be afraid to speak up for our area, no matter who is in power. As your MP I am here to help you on any matter at all so please get in touch if you think I can be of assistance. I can't always guarantee that I will be successful but I will at least try my best.
I am also always keen to hear your views on local and national issues. So, whether you need help on a specific issue, or you simply want to share your views on a big issue, please do not hesitate to get in touch. You pay my wages so please make use of me!
In Parliament, Andrew serves on the Regulatory Reform Committee and Health Select Committee. Andrew takes a keen interest in many policy areas including, Education, Foreign Affairs, Health, Northern Ireland, Local Government and Constitutional issues. He is an active member of a number of All Party Parliamentary Groups, including the APPG on Financial Education for Young People. Andrew recently chaired an inquiry entitled ‘Financial Education and the Curriculum’ which has been submitted to the national curriculum review and debated in the House of Commons.
