Statement to voters

I’m Elizabeth McWilliams, and I’ve lived in this ward for over 20 years and am Chair of Landbeach Parish Council because I am driven to want to solve problems and I cannot imagine being other than a community activist.

Full statement

I’ve already done so much for our community, think how much more I could achieve if elected!

I always say I won’t take ‘no’ for an answer and I will always stand up against injustice to make life better for our residents.

I have been campaigning for over two years about the incredibly dangerous Humphries Way A10 junction. It’s me that set up a survey to get residents’ views to share with officers; set up a petition with over 600 signatures which I presented to the Council Council at a Full Council meeting; and worked with a Labour councillor from outside the division to bring a motion to that same meeting. Now officers are working on funding-gap solutions to get safety work commenced sooner. Without my work on this, we’d be waiting a lot longer.

I secured repairs for council for tenants in Landbeach, who couldn’t access their own driveways due to the terrible state of the lane they lived on – a pitiful state of affairs that had gone on for years, with our current Lib Dem County councillor (and previous Tory councillors), simply trotting out technical arguments about dormant charities owning the unadopted road and failing to help this group describing themselves as ‘the forgotten residents of Landbeach’. I’d had enough. I wrote to the Chief Executive among others and got the job done!

I successfully pushed the District Council to sign up to the White Ribbon campaign (engaging men and boys to end violence against women and girls) after an initial refusal by the Lib Dem administration. To do this I worked with an independent councillor, because I know when I need to work with people, cross-party, to get the right thing done for residents.

I want to see Waterbeach village retain its train station and have been communicating with the GCP and campaign group Railfuture East Anglia about it.

As your District Councillor, I’ll stand up for all residents of Milton, Waterbeach, Landbeach and Chittering when things aren’t working as they should. I enjoy forming positive relationships with people in order to get the best results.

Elections here in Milton and Waterbeach ward are between Labour and the Lib Dems, despite what the Lib Dems might tell you. With Labour second in 4 out of the last 5 local elections (I only just missed out on being elected here in the last District Council election), it is easy to see that voting Labour means you will get a Labour councillor. More Labour councillors means more progressive votes in the Council chamber. As we have seen elsewhere in Cambridgeshire, progressive parties can and do form alliances to run councils – keeping the Conservatives and Reform out. Voting Labour will not let them in!

It is quite possible that the result in May could be a Council made up entirely of Lib Dem councillors: no debate, no scrutiny. I’m asking you to put a different voice in the room.
