Candidate pledges

Hope Not Hate, a London-based charity, canvassed local residents and community organisations to establish the following questions to the candidates in this ward.

How will you ensure there is a council-run and government-funded advice service which will help EU nationals register for settled status? And will you pledge your support for EU nationals to keep their right to vote after 29 March 2019?

"We have moved a motion at full council to give EU citizens full civil rights when we leave the EU but it was defeated when the Conservatives voted against. It is one of the pledges in our manifesto: http://www.barnetlabour.org.uk/manifesto2018. No council can guarantee a government-funded service but we are certainly happy to lobby for it. We will fund services that provide advice to EU nationals and continue to supporting our Registrar’s passport and nationality checking service to assist EU citizens. On behalf of Barnet Labour I have signed up to the 3 million campaign."

How will you improve the local traffic and address the road conditions?

"Our emphasis is on improving both air quality and the health of residents. To achieve this we will promote car sharing, electric charging points, a proper cycling strategy and walking to reduce congestion. On the condition of the roads we will improve the quality of material used and monitor and inspect work carried out with public money. This may take longer but we are determined to seek long-term solutions rather than short-term fixes."

Should 16 years olds have the right to vote? Please elaborate on your answer.

"As with the entire Labour Party we fully support votes for 16 year olds."
