Statement to voters
I have lived in Penge for 43 years.
Full statement
Before that I gained BA and D Phil degrees in Chemistry at Oxford University, and conducted research in Protein Chemistry in Cambridge, London and Berlin before working at Wellcome Research Laboratories in Beckenham for 17 years. I then retrained as a teacher and taught Science for 15 years. Meanwhile I gained an Open University degree in Humanities. I have been a member of The Green Party for 8 years.
My main means of transport is by bicycle, including commuting to Central London until I retired, when I celebrated by cycling to Istanbul; 2300 miles over 5 weeks. Cycling is good for fitness and for the pocket, and can be as quick as other means of transport. The gradual introduction of 20 mph speed limits and introduction of segregated cycle lanes has improved safety.
I joined the Green Party because of its ethos: environmentally aware, anti-war and egalitarian.
The disparity in wealth between rich and poor is damaging to our society, and the “bonus culture” of bankers is egregious. A universal basic income combined with a wealth tax on the top 1% would improve life for all. We must accept that frequent flying must be stopped. At the same time we must invest in the real green economy for a sustainable future.
I am a member of CND, The National Trust, Humanists UK and The Allotments Association, and a supporter of Make Votes Matter. I was formerly Secretary of Upper Chesham Allotments, and still cultivate my plot. I applaud those who volunteer to keep our parks clean and attractive. I oppose the use of plastic packaging
