Statement to voters

My name is Peter Fortune, and I am the Conservative London Assembly Member for Bexley and Bromley.

Full statement

I grew up on a council estate in Lambeth and moved to Bromley in 2006, where I live with my wife, who works in education, and my two children. I worked for many years for Newsquest media group across their London, Essex, and Sussex sites.

I was elected to Bromley council in 2010. I served as the executive assistant to the Environment before becoming Chairman of the Health and Wellbeing Board, and later joining the cabinet as portfolio holder for Children, Education and Families.

I was honoured to be the political lead for the turnaround of Children’s Services which received an Ofsted grade of ‘Good’ with ‘Outstanding Leadership’ in 2019.

I served as Deputy Leader of the Council from 2017 to 2021 and stood down as councillor for Hayes and Coney Hall in 2022 after being elected to the London Assembly.

On the London Assembly, I have served as Chairman of the Budget and Performance Committee and as Conservative Group Deputy Leader.

In my spare time I enjoy reading, walking, writing and cricket. You may also sometimes find me shouting at a piano that refuses to play properly.
