Full statement

As a life-long environmentalist Daniel is proud to be a shadow Environment Minister. It's a great job but what he really wants to be is the Environment Minister in Keir Starmer's next Labour Government with the power to make positive changes to tackle the climate emergency.

Daniel is a member of Greenpeace and has brought leaders on divestment to speak in Cambridge. He is also a bee fan -- he is a passionate Species Champion for the Ruderal Bumblebee and he campaigns to stop bee-killing pesticides.

After a decade of Tory rule, Cambridge people are suffering. There is a cost-of-living crisis and our public services have been cut to the bone. Daniel cares about social justice and he is a recognised Living Wage Foundation Parliamentary Champion. He has worked closely with students on the Cambridge University Living Wage campaign and with councillors to make Cambridge a proud Living Wage City.

As your MP, Daniel has been a leading voice for more funding for the police, against privatisation of local health services and for more cash for Cambridgeshire's NHS, including for better provision for mental health. He has led the campaign for fairer funding for Cambridge's schools and against cuts to nursery schools. He has been instrumental in securing laws to take back control of our local bus services.

As a constitutional reformer, Daniel backs an elected second chamber as well as votes at 16. Daniel is a patron of the Westminster Higher Education Forum, which aims to raise the quality of debate on public policy.

Daniel is Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Data Analytics and he is a recognised Champion for the Internet Watch Foundation. He is also a national Champion for Cancer Research UK.

Daniel lives on Victoria Road in Cambridge with his partner Barbara, known as 'Budge', very close to where they lived when they met as students at King's College.

Before he became MP for Cambridge, Daniel had a variety of jobs in the public and private sectors, including working as a national officer for UNISON for 12 years to tackle women's low pay and racism. He also ran his own business.

Outside politics, Daniel enjoys football, live music and walking. He was, in his youth, a promising middle-distance runner. He is a Cambridge United season-ticket holder and he can often be found enjoying chamber concerts at Kettle's Yard.
