Statement to voters

Hello! We are now close to the District Council election on the 4th of May.

Full statement

I share your frustration at the poor judgement nationally by government. Demanding photo ID is only one example. Here, so-called Independents cannot fix local issues. Why? LibDem run councils across England demonstrate local politics run for the benefit of the community IN SPITE OF BAD NATIONAL POLICY. I believe I can do more for Great Malvern, inside our Malvern Hills LibDem group, in our national party, if elected. LibDems can propose relevant successful examples from our best practice guiding improvements to local public services affordably, to keep council taxes low for the benefit of our local community. Having listened to Great Malvern residents who have told me that the key concerns of many are: • Planning appropriate housing we really need locally; ensuring necessary supporting infrastructure, like adequate sewage plant capacity, is in place FIRST. • Only the LibDem group on the District council voted against the revision of the South Worcestershire Development Plan (SWDPR) which is stacked towards developers and lacks sustainability criteria. What were Independents and Greens thinking, signing this revision off? • Re-opening Malvern Hills College for the benefit of Malvern residents. • ‘Doubling nature’ - Council to lead on sustainability measures to deliver vital protection of our green spaces. See more about the sustainability group in the LibDems, called Green LibDems here.. www.greenlibdems.org.uk • Tackling speeding in some of our local roads despite the County Council’s reluctance. • Improving access and restoring public transport - another County Council irresponsibility – but why has the current District council not pushed them harder? I want to see Malvern Hills District Council be much more creative and ambitious, set and achieve green targets in recycling to raise our game from the 40 per cents, to the level or above the top six English Councils, all Lib Dem run, in the 60 per cents today. We have a readymade network to identify proven solutions you might choose to adopt here. For example, Lib Dem run Bath has adopted a housing policy that will make any new houses net zero, costing a fraction to keep comfortably warm - words in action there – not even words in the SWDP revision... With your support, if elected, I would continue to listen to the local community, hear your views and concerns and report back regularly on the issues that are of concern to you. Liberal Democrats broaden consensus and debate, draw on the Liberal Democrat guiding principle to move towards a fairer and more equitable society, where everyone has a voice. www.LibDems.org.uk
