Statement to voters

Active, visible and committed - getting the job done for St Ives South.

Full statement

Hello, I'm Alex - many of you will know me as your County Councillor for St Ives South. This is the last election for Huntingdonshire District Council before the new unitary councils in 2027-2028. I am standing for Huntingdonshire District Council in St Ives South as I believe we need experienced councillors in this important reorganisation phase - as well as continue to represent your priorities locally.

I won in May 2025 the county council seat that includes St Ives - the first time Labour won this county seat since the seat was created! I am grateful to everyone who has put their trust in me and it has been a privilege to represent St Ives South residents over the last year. I would like to be an active and strong voice for you on the District Council as well.

My top 3 pledges
➡️ Doorknocking all year round and holding monthly in-person surgeries
➡️ Ensuring development is done properly - with infrastructure in first and not on sites that increase flood risk
➡️ Keeping our council local and preserving our Huntingdonshire identity in the new unitary councils

I have a strong track record on the County Council, and I will do the same on the District
Present. Monthly surgeries for residents at the library and all year-round canvassing listening to your concerns and following up with actions
Proactive. Vocal in every council meeting, whether it's standing up against the County Lib Dem's proposal to merge us with Fenland and Peterborough in the new unitaries, or speaking up on local issues such as flooding and busway safety
Principled. Councillors should be the voice of residents on the council, not the other way round. I have been an effective opposition member, and I challenge in a constructive way.

You may hear promises on other leaflets that sound appealing but simply cannot be delivered at a local level - such as "fixing the NHS" or changing immigration policy... This is a council election, not a general election. Local councils cannot change policy that is decided in Westminster, but active councillors can be effective in driving results locally.

I believe in being straightforward with residents: I will not overpromise, I will not be able to solve every issue, but I will work diligently within the council’s powers to get things done, protect your interests, and make sure your voice is heard.

Please vote for me, Alex Bulat, alongside my Labour and Co-Operative co-candidate Will Deacon (local resident a teacher), on the 7th of May.

The Labour Party formed a majority government under the leadership of Keir Starmer, winning over 400 seats. Other parties including the Liberal Democrats, Reform UK and the Green Party saw an increase in their seat share in the House of Commons at expense of the Conservatives and the Scottish National Party.
