Statement to voters

We need a Labour Government to deliver a decade of national renewal, restoring Britain's hope and optimism. After 14 years of the Tories, nothing seems to work. I was a Minister in 1998-2010, and served in the Cabinet as Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Since 2020, I have chaired the House of Commons Work and Pensions Select Committee. After the General Election, I want to help implement Labour's plan for a fairer, greener Britain. Living in Newham since 1978 and elected MP in June 1994 after 10 years as a Newham Councillor, I was Leader of the Council in 1990-94.
