Statement to voters
What one thing do you think Wakefield District Council has to change it’s approach towards? Climate change! Of course, very on brand for us Greens.
Full statement
Public transport is a big issue in the area, especially out in Featherstone. There are train and bus services, but trains can be infrequent and are expensive! Some subsidised travel on public transport and better provisions for active transport (footpaths, protected cycle lanes etc) would help reduce personal vehicle use in the area, decreasing traffic and increasing air quality. What difference do you think a Green Party Councillor could make in Featherstone? I think that it’s important that Labour are held to account in Featherstone. Labour councillors are constantly elected in Featherstone without too much contest from other parties. A Green councillor in the ward would put pressure on Labour to be active in their area and work hard for the people they represent. What five words (or phrases) best describe you as a prospective councillor? Hard working, dedicated, trustworthy, focused and willing to stand up for issues that voters are facing! How would a Green approach help ordinary people to better manage the cost of living? 1. Retrofitting. Rolling out insulation in all existing properties to ensure that heating bills are as low as possible by ensuring the heat stays in! 2. Investment in renewable energy. No more oil and gas power stations, with massive emissions and unsightly cooling towers, and instead moving to solar and wind power, which is the cheapest (and of course cleanest!) source of energy. 3. Implementing a Universal Basic Income. Replacing the current Universal Credit system which is not fit for purpose with a new UBI system, guaranteeing a decent basic income for everyone. All 3 of these need implementing together to help the cost of living crisis.
