Statement to voters

Coventry is the city where I was born and grew up.

Full statement

I went to Bishop Ullathorne school and got my first job at British Home Stores. Having served as the Labour MP for Wakefield, as a government minister, and in the Shadow Cabinet, I want to use my experience to make a difference in my home city. Coventry has been rocked by 14 years of Tory chaos which have stretched our public services to breaking point. People are struggling to pay their bills and feed their families. In some parts of our city, 40% of children live in poverty. We need schools that give every child the best start in life, more police to tackle the fly tippers and car racers and more nurses and doctors to reduce NHS waiting lists. We must attract new green jobs to our city, insulate homes , cut air pollution and end homelessness. We need a fairer tax system and an economy that works for working people. It would be an honour to represent my home city in Parliament. If you live in Coventry East and have any questions or just want to say hello, please get in touch!
